Logging On To Lab Services' Computers Using your NetID

Why are we requiring logons?

In order to provide for a more secure computing environment, we are moving to a system that supports individual logons. This will ensure that the only people using the lab computers are those with valid UT NetIDs.

Be Safe with your NetID:

Users will be held responsible for his or her NetID and how that ID is used on the computers. It is not advisable to share NetID information with others. Please Remember to log off when you are finished with your session. This will prevent others from using your account.

Directions for the First-Time Log On:

The first time you log into a machine, you will need to use your NetID as well as your ORIGINAL NetID password. After you have logged on for the first time, you will be asked to change your password. From that point on, you will use your new password whenever you log on in an OIT lab.

What is my NetID?
Your NetID is usually the "name" part of your university email address. If your name is Joe Smith and your username is jsmith80@utk.edu, your NetID username will be jsmith80.

If you are not sure what your email username is, please look yourself up in the UT Online Directory.

What is my Original NetID password?
Your default Original password is:

Example:

Joe Smith has an ID number of 123-45-6789. He was born on May 14, 1980. Joe's default NetID password is: ma806789.

What happens if I can't logon or I forget my password?

If you have tried to logon to the computer 7 times and failed, the system will lock you out for approximately 1/2 hour. Try waiting and logging on again a little later. If you do not remember your password, follow these steps to change your password.

  1. Go here: http://oit.utk.edu/
  2. Click on Passwords
  3. Click on Forgotten
  4. Click on NetID
  5. Fill out the form - Notice the checked box that says "Synchronize with Active Directory"
  6. Click Change Password
Note: when you Synchronize your password with Active Directory, this will change your computer lab logon password. Changing your password through this form will also change your email password as well as your NetID password.
